Frontend & Backend Development
The digital equivalent of the flagship showroom
For many e-commerce projects, the main aim is to maximise conversions and boost sales. Porsche Design, however, has taken a different approach.
The priority was not to create a platform focused solely on sales. It was equally important to ensure adequate product visibility and to create a shopping experience that met the expectations of the brand’s premium customer base.
The online shop was intended to serve a dual purpose.
- Support product sales and customer service on a global scale.
- Build the brand experience, showcase its history and enable users to explore the collections in a way that is consistent with the Porsche Design philosophy.
This approach required combining a high-quality user experience with an architecture capable of supporting complex business processes carried out by multiple interconnected systems.
The challenge
A premium brand experience in the online world
Porsche Design products are characterised by their refined design, high-quality craftsmanship and functionality. Translating these values into the digital environment was one of the key challenges of the project. The platform had to enable users to explore products freely and create an atmosphere characteristic of a premium brand. This meant creating an environment that would support both sales and brand communication.
Global sales and consistent processes
At the same time, the online shop served as the central element of the Porsche Design sales ecosystem. Order processing, warehouse management, logistics, payments and after-sales activities required the smooth coordination of numerous systems and partners. As the scale of operations grew, process automation and ensuring a stable flow of data became crucial.
Scalability and readiness for growth
The project aimed to create a solution that would support the brand’s operations in the long term. The platform had to enable the rapid roll-out of new features, the integration of further services and business growth without the need to overhaul the technological infrastructure
In the case of Porsche Design, the biggest challenge was to combine the high expectations associated with the premium brand experience with the requirements of a global e-commerce platform. The key was to strike a balance between aesthetics, performance and the integration of business processes.
Key insight from the project
Our approach
We began by analysing the role of the online shop within the Porsche Design digital ecosystem.
It soon became clear that the platform had to perform far more tasks than a standard online shop. It was intended to simultaneously support sales, build brand experience and integrate the operational processes responsible for order fulfilment and customer service.
That is why, when designing the solution, we focused on two parallel areas.
- The first step was to create an environment that met the expectations of the premium brand’s target audience.
- Secondly – ensuring the smooth coordination of the systems responsible for logistics, sales and customer service.
This approach made it possible to align user needs with business and technological requirements, laying the foundations for the platform’s further development.
Solution:
Cloud-based e-commerce platform
One of the key objectives of the project was to create a solution that would support the long-term development of Porsche Design.
Rather than building a platform from scratch, we decided to use a tried-and-tested e-commerce solution operating in a cloud model. This approach enabled us to base the project on the platform’s standard features, shorten implementation cycles and simplify the process of subsequent updates.
The new Porsche Design shop is based on the global, cloud-based e-commerce platform Optimizely Commerce (formerly Episerver Commerce).
This enabled us to focus on the areas of greatest importance from a business and user perspective – product presentation, customer experience and the integration of sales support processes.
At the same time, the platform has gained a scalable technological foundation that enables further development without the need to overhaul the entire environment.
Architecture ready for growth
Using the REST API, the platform has been integrated with solutions that support, amongst other things:
- supply chain management,
- warehouse operations,
- order fulfilment,
- cooperation with business partners.
This approach has made it possible to streamline data flows and lay solid foundations for the further development of the e-commerce environment.
Process automation
A key element of the project was the automation of the processes involved in sales and after-sales activities.
Order fulfilment processes have been integrated directly into the platform, thereby reducing the number of manual tasks carried out by the operational teams.
Automation has also been extended to areas relating to:
- payments (Adyen),
- tax services (Avalera, Melissa),
- the location of services (Google Places),
- and integration with ERP systems (D365).
This approach has improved the stability of sales support processes and enabled the creation of a more consistent experience for both customers and the teams responsible for operating the platform.
Technology that enhances the experience of premium brands
In projects for premium brands, technology is not an end in itself. It should remain invisible to the user, whilst ensuring the platform’s reliability, performance and ease of use.
The platform’s frontend was developed using a native implementation of HTML5 and extensive modules built using React. This approach has made it possible to combine high performance with the flexibility required to build advanced user experiences.
As a result, the platform ensures a seamless product presentation, a consistent shopping experience and compliance with UX requirements across different devices.
The Result
A global online shop has been launched, serving as Porsche Design’s digital flagship store.
The platform combines the brand’s premium expertise with a modern approach to digital commerce, integrating sales, logistics and after-sales processes within a single environment. Thanks to its scalable architecture and the use of cloud technologies, the solution is ready for further development and to support the brand’s future business initiatives.
Today, the platform serves as the central point of contact between the brand and its customers, bringing together product presentation, sales and operational processes within a single environment.
